The Defence Medal was for service on shore for 3 years.

A circular, cupro-nickel medal, 36mm in diameter. The ribbon is 31.75mm wide, comprising a central stripe of orange and a narrow black stripe in the middle of each green stripe. The orange represents the enemy attacks on the green land of Britain and the black represents the black-outs. The medal was established on 16 August 1945.
