MY GRANDFATHERS MEDALS

THE BRITISH WAR MEDAL*

The British War Medal was granted to all military or Naval personnel whether they served at home or abroad.

A circular, silver medal, 36mm in diameter. The watered ribbon is 39mm wide, comprising 7 coloured stripes: blue, black, white, orange, white, black and blue. The medal was established in Britain on 26 July 1919.

* On the rim of each medal is the engraving "146470A J. Wilson DH, RNR". The DH denotes Deck Hand. This was a rank for the trawlers and drifters (fishing fleet), drafted into the Royal Navy for anti-submarine and mine-sweeping duties.
